News that the dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy in 1962 sold for $4.8 million dollars at auction recently, has a seller of movie posters sounding a warning.

“If you are going to get a movie memorabilia item,” said webmaster and owner of Just Movie Posters.Com, Ilena Di Toro. “Get it because you like the movie, the stars, the genre or even the design itself. Don’t buy it with the expectation that you can sell it for a million dollars in ten years and retire to Florida.”

The Internet has made the buying and selling of entertainment memorabilia very easy. Still, it is important for people to think before making a purchase, since it is difficult to know what will increase in value years from now.

“Take a film like, Citizen Kane,” Di Toro said.  “It bombed when it came out in 1941. Fast forward to July 2006, a one sheet poster of the film sold at auction for almost $60,000. How could anyone in 1941 know that this film would end up being so highly regarded?”
“It can be cool to own movie memorabilia item,” said Di Toro. “Just don’t pin all your financial dreams on the item.”
